Assistive Technology Makes Rachel’s Life More Satisfying

Rachel is an athlete who enjoys mountain biking, rowing, skiing, and rock climbing. After a spinal cord injury in 2019, she continued to stay active through adaptive sports.

In 2025, when Rachel and her wife Alyson began searching for a new home in Louisville, Kentucky, accessibility was a top priority. After purchasing their home in March, they added a ramp for entry. To make the space fully functional, they also needed to modify the bathroom.

To cover the cost of the renovations, Rachel and Alyson turned to the Appalachian Assistive Technology Loan Fund (AATLF), securing a $7,000 no-fee, no-interest loan. The funding supported labor and essential modifications, including grab bars, an accessible tub, a tilting mirror, and a toilet system with a bidet. “All of these assistive technology devices are super helpful for me,” Rachel shared.

Reflecting on the experience, she explained, “Buying a home can be great but also intimidating. When you add the specific needs of a person with a disability, you can face certain barriers. The loan took away a lot of anxiety and pressure from the home buying process.”

Rachel also appreciated the support of AATLF Program Manager and Underwriter, Sarah Love: “Some processes for other loans and grants can be exhausting—lots of time, energy, and red tape. Fortunately for us, Sarah made the process unintimidating and smooth.”

In addition to the bathroom renovation, Rachel relies on other assistive technology (AT) for everyday living. By using a Google Home system connected to smart devices, she can open doors, adjust lights, control the thermostat, and more—all with her voice or smartphone.

“Without AT, I wouldn’t have the energy to live life the way I want to. My independence is very important to me. Assistive technology makes my life work—it’s how I drive a car and access the community. AT makes it possible for me to work, play sports, and contribute to my household,” she explained.
